28th october 2024- First Hammerheads of the Season
With a massive lull in the weather forecast, low winds and small swell called our boat, “So Wild”, out to South Solitary Island. We were presented with lovely conditions! The little wind and swell accompanied with minimal to no current made all dive sites very appealing to us!
We jumped in the water at Shark Gutters to explore some of the top end. Lucky us – we saw our first Scalloped Hammerhead, although solo, swimming in the shallows of Cleaner Station! This is the time of year we will start to see them more regularly, even if it is for a short (ish) period of time. A few Grey Nurse Sharks were also seen hiding inside the cleaner cave, most likely due to the presence of the Hammerheads! Abbots Moray Eels, Black Cod, and a Hawksbill Turtle were also highlights.
Excited to get back in and find out if there were more Hammerheads, divers descended at Shark Gutters again for a swim down to the Gantry! A Shiver of Scalloped Hammerheads swam by our advanced group of students just before South Boulder, numbering about 30-40 sharks! Divers also saw our usual Bull rays, schooling fish, and some crayfish down the boulder wall.
