Welcome to the July 2024 Jetty Dive Debrief! Here we are going to let you know how the water has been, what the season showed us, any interesting or noteworthy details, and what we’ve achieved as a shop! So join us to read what we’re been up to in the past three months.

I was away for 3 weeks in June, Teagan left for a holiday a few days after I returned, and just before Teagan got back Lindsay headed off with a group of our divers for our Fiji Beqa Lagoon Shark Dives trip!

In super exciting news, Jetty Dive Centre is now a PADI Eco Centre! We have been working hard at achieving this title for a few years, as we have been very environmentally focused for most of our time operating! You can read more about what that means here, in our Eco Store Blog Post.

Seasonal Marine Life Activity:

Throughout April and May we did fewer dives due to bad weather. We were still seeing Leopard Sharks all through April and early May, seeing the last one on May 12th. Another fun sighting was the huge 2m Great Barracuda seen on a North Solitary Island trip on April 14th.

In sadder news, we spotted a Grey Nurse Shark with a 8-10m rope stuck in it’s mouth on the 18th of April, and afterwards on the 5th of May.

On the 9th of June we had an awesome sighting of a Giant Cuttlefish! It’s been a few years since we last saw one – we see plenty of little cuttlefish, but not the Giant ones! So the divers were quite excited about this one! We also saw a Guitarshark on this day.

On the 26th of June we also heard some Whale Songs while diving, which is also a lovely experience through a dive.

Conditions

Visibility

In April, the visibility started at 35m, dropping down to 7m at the lowest, but sitting mostly around 15-20m.

In May visibility was 20-25m, dropping to a low of 8m but generally sitting around 15m-20m

In June, visibility was usually 10-15m, getting to a high of 30m and having a low of 3-5m. We finished strong on 20m.

Temperature

Throughout April the temperature started at 25°C, and at the end of the month was 24°C. May started and ended fluctuating between 22°C-23°C. Come June, temperatures started at 21°c, and headed down to 20°C.

Sustainability and the environment

This section we are dedicating to showing what steps we are taking to reduce our environmental impact. It might include incentives we have implemented or tried through the month, or programs we have participated in. We intend to expand upon our conservation efforts page with everything we have implemented in store – as we are doing much more than this page shows!

As noted above, unfortunately found a shark with a long trailing 10m rope from it’s mouth. When we spotted this, we got in contact with the conservation staff at Seaworld. They made the trip down to coffs and our team joined them in looking for the shark to attempt to remove the rope. Unfortunately, we could not find the shark on this day.
