PNG Tufi Dive trip Report May 2016
Fantastic Diving was had on both trips.
Unreal walls and offshore reefs, Macro excellence in the Fjords
Tufi Dive Resort offers a Fantastic range of Diving! Whilst we were amazed with the untouched offshore reefs (a distance off shore that is not fished out) with the range and quantity of fish-life, we were also impressed with the critter and macro diving that the House reef and Fjords offered.
Both the trips we ran, the first lead by Mike and Deb, and the second lead by Lindsay and Sarah saw what we think was the best of Tufi diving.
The Group deal we had, has some great features, 17 boat dives (if you want to dive them all) including double dives to the outer reefs that have walls that drop away to the abyss.
The rooms were well appointed, and had a touch of luxury with the way it was presented. All of our group received a free upgrade to the Deluxe rooms!
The main bar and dining area is very well laid out and comfortable too, and the staff friendly and helpful. A hint of luxury in a remote location.
The outer reef dives were excellent!
The first group were lucky enough to see the elusive White Hammerhead Shark on a number of occasions, whilst dealing with a bit of current. The second group only had a glimpse of the Hammerheads, but had much less current to deal with. Both trips had amazing variety of fishlife on the outer reef dives. The whole walls and slopes of coral were alive with small and large fish. Nemo’s to numerous to get excited about!
The Fjords were not as good with the visibility, but offerred nudibranchs and critters you can’t find elsewhere. The Fjords offered some nice easy diving with lots of corals too.
Tufi Resort Dive Shop, down at the sea level, is a short walk or truck ride downhill from the cliff top resort. The local divemasters and boat operators were fantastic, offering more help than you need, even wash your gear for you! Around the wharf you can find lots of little critters in their shore based “muck dive”, but most of our groups had enough diving with the 3 boat dive we did, that we didn’t bother with the 4th dive of the day.
Tufi Dive Resort is a lovely place to stay, great service and facilities, considering the remote location to services, by air or water only!
Our return trip required a stop-over in Port Moresby, and we questioned to quality of the Shady Rest Hotel that we were booked into. As it turned out, the rooms were lovely and newly renovated, and the restaurant had great service and meals.
Our only complaint is the trip was too short, maybe next time we would stay a few days longer to enjoy the great diving!
